Dell Inspiron iM501R-2272MRB has a grave Bag of design ideas, but most of them look like the cheaper cousin of an inspired design. The palm rest is to look at what that meant, but finished metallic looks just like cheap plastic, because that is exactly what it is. Our tester had a red cover, there was a slight hint of the style of the better-TV Samsung lines, but only just. The flat keyboard includes a numeric keypad. Unlike far too many notebooks, this is not at the expense of the cursor keys, which have a reasonable size, but the space bar, which has shrunk slightly since to accommodate the extra keys. If you regularly hit the outer edges of the space bar while typing this could be a problem, but we could not find it too troublesome.
Features
As with most things Dell has a certain amount of adjustment available with the Inspiron iM501R-2272MRB. Our tester was actually something of an anomaly, as it has a configuration Dell does not sell any more. On-board our system was an AMD Phenom II N830 2.1GHz triple-core processor, but the system (at the time of writing) ships with an AMD Phenom 1.6 GHz II P920 Quad-core mobile processor. This model had only 4GB of RAM, but the current specification provides 6GB. Storage is handled on a 500GB 7200rpm hard drive with a display of an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 550V graphics card with 1 GB on-board RAM. Screen resolution 1366×768 Tops at. The iM501R-2272MRB features four USB ports, of which a combination USB/eSATA port is connected, and they are all rather odd at the back and the back pages will be distributed. This is probably a limitation motherboard, but it is a troublesome one, because there are a lot of space on the front pages, where they would have accommodated more easily. The M501R ships with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition.

Performance
The iM501R-2272MRB gave us a solid performance with a PCMark05 score of 5909. The 1 GB of dedicated graphics memory and pushed it to the 3D performance stakes with a respectable 3DMark06 score of 5438. This does not mean you push it into the framework of the best dedicated gaming notebook, but it is far ahead of most of the rest of the pack at this price. It is worth considering that the device currently sold here should (theoretically) a bit faster than the unit, we were able to test.
Desktop replacement notebooks usually do not come with large batteries, but we were poor as the iM501R-2272MRB cut in our battery tests surprised. They are designed for a worst-case scenario picture, instead of the red-hot numbers that give the providers tout the rule. With all the energy-saving measures turned off, cranked up to full screen brightness and a loop to play xvid file that will open after a terrible iM501R-2272MRB one hour and 25 minutes gave the Spirit. Use this as your in-flight movie player, and you were happy, even by the lightest of romantic comedies get, before it cut out. With careful battery management, you would like more, but probably not much more.

Conclusion
From a performance perspective, the iM501R-2272MRB delivers beautiful, and if you were in for a desktop replacement notebook in the search and passes the style mag (which we do not), it would fit perfectly. More so than in many other desktop replacement notebooks we’ve recently tested, but there is power in a rather alarming, if not directly connected to the AC.
