Toshiba Portege R600

Toshiba unveils the Port R600 last autumn as Centrino 2 Upgrade to the R500. The R500 barely weigh less than a Asus Eee PC 701 – the R600 we have here is even easier.

What it actually is an aluminum alloy in the chassis slot is a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor, sits on a 800 MHz frontside bus, by up to 3 GB DDR 2 memory. Storage comes courtesy of the Netbook-style, but with an SSD HDD to 128GB capacity. The screen is a 12.1in Netbook-beat, 1280 x 800, LED-backlit panel of Intel’s latest integrated graphics core, the GMA 4500MHD, part of the GS45 chipset.

True to its Go-Anywhere ambitions, the R600 includes 802.11n Wi-Fi and network unlocked 7.2Mb s HSDPA 3G module. It also has Bluetooth.

A trip around the plastic housing, we have, from back to front, power, VGA, USB Combo 2.0 eSATA, vanilla 3.5 mm audio and USB ports and a volume wheel on the left. The right side is home to a Gigabit Ethernet jack, a third USB port, a switch for the wireless sub-system, an ExpressCard-54-bay, and a SDHC card slot.

Celio REDFLY C8N has come

Celio REDFLY C8N has come

It’s been a few weeks since the FedEx man stopped for a visit. Perhaps the joy with each delivery, I fear him, who knows? This time he fell from a Loaner Celio REDFLY C8N and Sprint Treo 800W to try. For those who are not with Celio’s REDFLY: The device is essentially a bigger screen and keyboard that the full power of a smartphone. There is no CPU or memory of it, other than what is needed to connect your phone is on a larger screen. Your phone can be via a USB cable or wirelessly via Bluetooth if your phone supports.

This is the REDFLY with some beefed-up features over the base model. For example, the 800 480 is eight-inch display, an extra inch of viewing. The battery capacity increases: 4500mAh in this model via the standard 2000mAh unit. Adds that half a pound to the weight, but on a total of two pounds, it is still very manageable. This model also offers the unique Media Port, so I also take a closer look at the link “Mobile Media” devices to see how well it works. How often I use my Netbook in those days, I’m really curious about the pros and cons of this solution on my MSI Wind. I tend to use the Internet for most everything I do, there should be an interesting experiment to use a Windows Mobile-powered REDFLY with Windows 7 on my Wind.
